The Vintage is an annual publication to represent a year at this university. The book serves as a collection of memories and important events from the academic year. To contribute to the 2022 theme of the book “By their fruits you will know them,” the design of the book draws upon the visual characteristics and socio-cultural associations of different fruit through the patterns, typography, colors and layout.

I created this original sketch inspired by the flat pattern design of William Morris. Featuring a variety of illustrated fruits, the pattern pictorially represents the unification of people loving their neighbors as themselves. This flowing-vine-to-branch relationship is furthered through using the typeface Migra, designed by Valerio Monopoli. The strong serifs and modernity of Quarto are used for much of the text in the book. The sans-serif Montserrat contrasts the two serif fonts to provide simplicity in the design. The rich colors used throughout—inspired by cherries, blueberries, pears, limes, lemons, strawberries and black currants—convey optimism, reminding the viewer of the blessings that come from loving others.
